Charlotte and Koda: A Journey of Growth

John Breen, father to Charlotte, speaks with gratitude about the incredible changes that Koda, their Autism Assistance Dog, has brought to their family’s life. Since Koda’s arrival, Charlotte has achieved milestones they once thought impossible.

“Since Koda has come into our home and become a part of our family, Charlotte has made so many gains,” John shares. “We can now enjoy ordinary, everyday activities that were once a struggle—or not possible at all. We can take the bus, walk through traffic, navigate parked cars, go shopping, visit the beach, and do so many lovely things that used to feel out of reach.”

For John and his family, the turning point was receiving that life-changing call from Autism Assistance Dogs, telling them Koda was joining their lives. From that moment, everything shifted. “I can’t even begin to describe all the amazing changes that have happened since. It’s not just the official ‘work’ Koda does when out with Charlotte—it’s all the little things too, the extra bonuses we never expected. Like how she sleeps outside Charlotte’s bedroom every night, quietly watching over her.”

Out in busy places, Koda does her best work. “When we’re out, and Charlotte is attached to Koda, everything changes. Charlotte walks alongside Koda, calm and relaxed, constantly checking in with her and with me. She talks to Koda, watches her closely, and most importantly, she’s no longer interested in running away. Instead, she’s enjoying the experience.”

This is monumental. She is safe. She is confident. She is empathetic. She is happy. She is growing up. I hope every child with autism who needs an Assistance Dog can experience what we have. Koda has transformed our world.
